Encouraging families to live healthy lives – by making good food choices, being physically active, sustaining a healthy weight, not smoking and drinking alcohol only in moderation – is part of the Government’s approach to promoting good health.
Healthy Families New Zealand (HFNZ) is a new initiative that aims to bring together the right mix of leadership, encouragement, information and resources to help people make healthier choices for themselves and their families.
What are Healthy Families NZ communities?
The most visible aspect of HFNZ will be the establishment of 10 HFNZ communities. HFNZ will support local leaders to implement voluntary initiatives that encourage families to live healthy, active lives. Through investment in community partnerships and a skilled health promotion workforce, these communities will find local solutions to local needs, supporting healthy living. Activities will initially focus on the settings where people live, learn, work, and play.
Where are the HFNZ communities?
It is expected that HFNZ communities will reach approximately 900, 000 New Zealanders. The communities selected for HFNZ implementation are:
- East Cape
- Far North District
- Invercargill City
- Lower Hutt City
- Rotorua District
- Manukau Ward
- Manurewa-Papakura Ward
- Spreydon-Heathcote Ward
- Waitakere Ward
- Whanganui District
How were the HFNZ communities selected?
The 10 HFNZ communities come from areas with higher-than-average rates of preventable chronic diseases (such as diabetes), higher-than-average rates of risk factors for these diseases (such as smoking), and/or high levels of deprivation.
The 10 communities are geographically spread and are a mixture of urban and rural areas, so the HFNZ programme will be able to provide valuable evidence on what works for a diverse range of communities.
What will be involved?
The funding for HFNZ will allow providers to:
- establish and build a local health promotion workforce
- support communities to find local solutions to local needs
- roll out a range of programmes that provide skills and support for families to achieve better health
- support prevention partnerships within their communities (e.g. with government, non-government organisations, businesses and community members)
- support health promoting early childhood services, schools, workplaces and communities
- tailor health messaging to local circumstances and needs
- contribute to research and evaluation.
When will it start?
The process for establishing HFNZ began with the release of a Registration of Interest (ROI) process on 14 March 2014. The purpose of the ROI was to identify and short-list organisations who could act as Local Lead Providers for the implementation of HFNZ in the communities selected.
